A makeup base is the set of layers that even the skin before any colour goes on — prep, primer, colour correction, foundation, concealer and the set — built thin and in order, so that the eyes, lips and structure sit on a surface that reads as skin and lasts. Powder structure (powder contour, blush, highlight) goes on after the powder set, over it — cream on cream, powder on powder.
Why the order matters
Each layer needs the one beneath it to be the right state: primer on absorbed skin (or it slides), foundation on set primer (or it pills), concealer on foundation (or it is wasted covering what foundation would have), cream on cream (or it patches), powder on cream (or it cakes), spray on powder (or it does nothing). Base vs foundation
"Foundation" is the colour layer; "base" is the system. A bride asking for an "HD base" or an "airbrush base" is asking for a system — the HD or airbrush product is the foundation layer inside the same sequence, with the same prep, correction, concealing and setting around it. The base by skin type

Faults a wrong base causes
Everything above it fails: eyeshadow creases on an unset lid, blush patches on a dry base, a lip bleeds into a base that was never set at the edge, contour sits as a stripe on an unprimed cheek, a highlight flashes on SPF. When a look fails, the artist looks at the base first.

- "The base is the day" — the first thing I say in the base module; the eyes and the lip are decoration on it.
- Most student faults are order faults: powder under cream, concealer before foundation, primer on wet moisturiser.
