Skin Preparation Before Makeup: the ten minutes that decide how a base sits, lasts and photographs

A base can only be as good as the surface under it, and the surface is decided twice: by the skincare of the weeks before, and by the ten minutes of preparation in the chair — cleanse, hydrate, absorb, protect, prime. Prep done right lets a thin base grip and last; prep skipped shows as pilling, slide, flakes and creasing by the second hour. Primers are in What is Primer?; reading the skin in Skin Types Explained for Makeup.
Prep vs skincare
| Skincare (the weeks before) | Prep (the ten minutes in the chair) | |
|---|---|---|
| Aim | Change the skin — hydration, texture, oil, tone | Make today's surface ready for product |
| Tools | Cleansers, exfoliants, actives, moisturisers, sunscreen | Cleanse or wipe, mist, hydrating layer, eye cream, lip balm, primer |
| Cannot | Substitute for prep on the day | Fix a neglected surface |
| Bridal rule | Nothing new inside two weeks; nothing abrasive inside three days | Nothing new; nothing that stings; nothing that leaves a film |
The bride's own calendar is on the Makeovers site: 30-Day Bridal Skin Preparation Guide.
The in-chair sequence
| Step | What | Why | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Cleanse | A gentle cleanser, or micellar water on a pad over already-clean skin; no scrub | Removes oil, residue, last night's product; a clean surface grips | 1 min |
| 2. Tone or mist | A hydrating, alcohol-free mist or toner, pressed | Rebalances; a damp surface takes the hydrating layer evenly | 30 s |
| 3. Treat (optional) | A hydrating serum (humectant) on dry or dehydrated skin; a light oil-control serum on oily | Targets the day's problem under the base | 30 s + absorb |
| 4. Hydrate | Moisturiser by type — gel on oily, lotion on combination, cream on dry and mature — thin, pressed | The base sits on hydrated skin and does not cling to flakes or sink into lines | 30 s |
| 5. Eyes and lips | Eye cream patted in; lip balm applied thickly (blotted off before the lip is done) | The under-eye takes concealer without creasing; the lip takes colour without cracking | 30 s |
| 6. Absorb | Wait until nothing is slick — the consultation continues | Foundation over wet product slides and pills | 3–5 min |
| 7. Protect | Sunscreen only for daytime, non-flash functions, and only a flash-safe, non-greasy one; otherwise none | Filters flash white and grease a long-wear base | — |
| 8. Prime | By zone: mattifying on oily zones, hydrating on dry, smoothing over texture; pressed; a minute to set | Grips the base's carrier; controls oil; fills texture | 1 min + set |
Ten to twelve minutes, most of it absorbing — which is also the consultation and the swatch-settling time.
By skin type
- Oily: gel cleanse; alcohol-free mist; light oil-control serum if familiar; gel moisturiser; mattifying primer on the T-zone; no oils, no heavy creams.
- Dry: cream cleanse; hydrating mist; humectant serum; cream moisturiser, thin; hydrating primer; balm on the lips early.
- Combination: as oily on the T-zone, as dry on the cheeks — two moisturisers or one lotion, two primers.
- Mature: as dry, with eye cream and a smoothing primer on lines; more absorbing time.
- Sensitive: fragrance-free everything the client already uses; nothing new; no mist with alcohol; a patch-tested primer. See Makeup for Sensitive and Allergy-Prone Skin.
- Acne-prone: gentle non-comedogenic cleanse; light gel; no occlusives; a non-comedogenic primer.
- Textured / large pores: a smoothing silicone primer pressed into the texture after the hydrating layer has absorbed.
- Dehydrated (any type): humectant serum and a lotion; the "oily but tight" face is this one.
The base choice that follows is in How to Choose Foundation for Your Skin Type.
What to skip on the day
- Exfoliants, acids, retinoids, scrubs, masks — anything that changes the surface.
- New products of any kind.
- Heavy face oils under a long-wear base.
- Sunscreen under a photographed base.
- Alcohol-heavy toners on dry or sensitive skin.
- Extractions, threading, waxing — inflamed skin does not take a base.
- Hot towels or steam — the skin swells and oils.
Flakes, oil and redness on the morning
- Flakes: a hydrating mist, a damp cloth pressed and lifted gently, a richer hydrating layer, more absorbing time; never a scrub.
- Excess oil: a blotting paper after the moisturiser has absorbed, a mattifying primer on the zones; never a stripping cleanser (the skin oils more).
- Redness: a calming, fragrance-free hydrating layer; the base corrects the colour; nothing that stings.
- A reaction: stop, cool water, a bland moisturiser, nothing else; the artist works around it or not at all.
The night before
The client is told: the usual routine, nothing new, no actives, a thick lip balm, sleep on the back, water. The bride's version: The Night Before Your Wedding Makeup.
From Chhaya Yadav's experience
Observations from bridal and teaching work in Jaipur — professional observations, not statistics.
- The absorbing minutes are the consultation — I never rush them; a base on wet moisturiser slides by the pheras.
- No sunscreen under a photographed base is the rule brides question most and thank me for in the flash frames.
- "Oily but tight" is dehydration, and a humectant serum under the gel moisturiser fixes more May bases than any mattifier.
- Prep cannot save a face that was scrubbed last night — the flakes lift under the first layer; the two-week rule exists for the morning's ten minutes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum skin prep before makeup? Clean, hydrated, absorbed, primed. A gentle cleanse (or a micellar wipe over clean skin), a hydrating layer suited to the skin type, a few minutes for it to absorb fully, then primer by zone. Four steps, ten minutes; skipping any of them shows in the base by the second hour.
How long should moisturiser absorb before foundation? Until the skin no longer feels slick — usually three to five minutes for a lotion or gel, longer for a cream. Foundation over a wet moisturiser slides and pills; the primer goes on absorbed skin, and the base on set primer, with a minute between each.
Should sunscreen go under bridal makeup? Not under a photographed base. Most sunscreens carry titanium dioxide, zinc oxide or other filters that bounce camera flash as a white cast, and many are greasy under a long-wear base. Sunscreen is for the days before and for daytime functions without flash if the artist chooses a flash-safe one; on a wedding morning the base itself and shade are the protection.
What is the difference between skin prep and skincare? Skincare is the weeks and months that change the skin — hydration, exfoliation, treatment. Prep is the ten minutes that make today's surface ready for product — clean, hydrated, absorbed, primed. Prep cannot fix a surface that skincare neglected; skincare cannot substitute for prep on the morning.
Key takeaways
- Cleanse, mist, treat, hydrate, eyes and lips, absorb, (protect), prime — ten minutes, most of it absorbing.
- By type: gel and mattify on oily; cream and hydrate on dry; two of each on combination; familiar and fragrance-free on sensitive.
- Skip actives, new products, oils, sunscreen under flash, and anything abrasive on the day.
- Prep readies the surface; skincare in the weeks before is what made the surface.
