How Foundation Works: pigments, carriers and film-formers — and why a base wears, moves, oxidises or lasts

A foundation is pigment suspended in a carrier and held to the skin by a film-former, with powders that set its finish; how those parts are balanced decides coverage, finish and wear, and what happens to them on the skin — the carrier leaving, sebum lifting the film, heat and friction breaking it — decides whether a base lasts. Understanding the mechanism is what lets an artist choose a formula, a primer and a setting method by reason rather than habit. What happens on the skin
- Applied: the carrier spreads pigment over the surface; a thin layer levels into pores and texture.
- Setting (the first minutes): water evaporates, volatile silicones flash off, the film-former begins to bind; the colour shifts slightly as the layer thins — which is why a shade is judged after ten minutes.
- Hour one onward: sebum rises through and around the film; on oily zones it softens the film and re-wets the pigment (shine, slide, a warmer shift as iron oxides interact with oil and the skin's acidity); sweat dissolves water-based binders; heat thins whatever carrier remains; movement breaks the film at creases; friction removes it.
- Set and primed layers resist all of this longer: the primer grips the film, the thin layer has less to move, the powder absorbs the sebum before it re-wets the pigment, and the spray fuses the layers into one.
Why the format behaves as it does
- Water-based liquids feel like nothing and breathe, because the carrier is gone within minutes and the film is light; they wear shorter and dissolve in humidity.
- Silicone-based long-wear liquids level and resist water because the silicone film is hydrophobic and flexible; they need a silicone primer beneath (a water-based primer under them pills as the two carriers reject each other) and oil to remove.
- Creams and sticks carry oils and waxes for coverage and slip; they are the richest, sit best on dry skin, and slide on oily skin unless set.
- Powder and mineral foundations have no liquid film — pigment and fillers pressed onto the skin's own moisture — so they hold on oily skin and dull on dry.
- Tints carry little pigment and little film; comfort over coverage.

- Prep: hydration on dry skin (so the carrier does not sink into flakes), oil control on oily skin (so sebum does not lift the film).

What is a film-former? A polymer that, as the carrier evaporates, leaves a thin flexible film binding the pigment to the skin. Long-wear and transfer-resistant foundations carry more of it; sheer tints carry little. More film-former means longer wear and a greater need for the primer beneath to be compatible and for the removal to use oil.
Why does the same shade look different on two people? The base is translucent, so the skin's own colour shows through and mixes with it; sebum and pH shift the iron oxides warmer over hours; and the light the face is seen in changes everything. A shade is judged on the jaw in daylight after it has sat for ten minutes, not in the bottle.
