Foundation oxidises when its iron-oxide pigments react with air, with the oils on the skin and with the skin's slightly acidic surface, and the colour shifts — darker, warmer, more orange — over the first hour or two. It is the most common reason a base that matched in the chair reads a shade off by the ceremony, and it is prevented by controlling oil, choosing the formula, applying thin and judging the shade after it settles. What is happening

  • The pigments: skin-tone foundations are coloured mostly with iron oxides — yellow, red and black — plus titanium dioxide for opacity. Iron oxides are stable in the bottle but are reactive at the surface once the carrier has gone.
  • The oil: sebum is the medium; it wets the pigment, carries it into contact with air and the skin's surface, and softens the film. The oilier the zone, the faster and stronger the shift.
  • The acidity: the skin's surface sits slightly acidic (commonly quoted around 4.5–5.5), and the interaction between that surface, the formula's own balance and the pigments contributes to the shift.
  • Heat and humidity accelerate everything.
  • The carrier leaving: the first, immediate change — a base looks lighter and thinner while wet and settles darker as water and volatile silicones flash off. This is not oxidation but is often mistaken for it; it is why a shade is judged after ten minutes.

The visible result: a base that goes on matching and, an hour later, reads darker and more orange — most on the T-zone and the cheeks nearest it, least on the dry perimeter.

How to test

  1. Two or three candidate shades swatched on the jaw in daylight.
  2. Judged after ten to fifteen minutes — the settled colour, not the wet one.
  3. Checked again after an hour, ideally after the skin has warmed.
  4. The shade that matches the neck and chest after the hour is the one — on a prone face that may be a half-shade lighter than the instant match.
  5. For a bride, the whole trial base worn for the afternoon and photographed at intervals.

How to prevent it

  • Control the oil: mattifying primer on the T-zone and any oily cheek; blot before touch-ups; a light pressed set on the oily zones. The skin-type method is in Makeup for Oily Skin.
  • Choose the formula: long-wear silicone bases seal the pigment under a hydrophobic film; mineral formulas rely more on titanium dioxide and zinc oxide (inert) and less on reactive iron oxides; a lighter-coverage base carries less pigment to shift.
  • Apply thin: a thin film has less pigment exposed and bonds better; a thick layer stays wet longer and shifts more.
  • Judge after settling, and choose the shade that matches the settled, one-hour colour.
  • Mix if needed: a drop of a lighter or cooler shade into the working shade for a prone client, tested the same way.
  • Set by zone, and use a mattifying spray on oily skin — powder that absorbs sebum before it wets the pigment slows the shift.
  • Prep the skin: an oil-controlling routine in the weeks before a function; no heavy oils under the base.

When it is not oxidation

  • Wet-to-dry darkening in the first minutes — the carrier leaving; normal; wait before judging.
