Makeup for Dry Skin: hydration first, and the products that do not flake
Dry skin shows everything that is under the makeup, so the makeup starts weeks before the makeup. A base cannot hide flaking; it magnifies it. The professional plan is hydration for weeks, gentle exfoliation the night before, cream and hydrating products pressed in thin, a satin finish, and almost no powder.
Dry, or dehydrated — or both
Dry skin lacks oil (a type); dehydrated skin lacks water (a state). Dry skin is usually dehydrated too, especially in a dry climate, and the fix for both starts with water: humectant serums under a richer moisturiser. See Skin Types Explained for Makeup.
The plan
- For weeks: gentle cleanser, hydrating serum, a richer moisturiser at night, sunscreen by day, a mild exfoliant once or twice a week you have used before, lip balm nightly.
- The night before: gentle exfoliation (never a scrub with grains), a hydrating mask you know, moisturiser.
- At the chair: hydrating serum, moisturiser, ten to fifteen minutes to absorb; a hydrating primer on the cheeks; a silicone smoother only on pores or lines that need it. See What is Primer?.
- Foundation: hydrating liquid, serum or cream, satin to dewy, pressed in with a damp sponge in thin layers. Matte and powder bases are out. See What is Foundation?.
- Concealer: creamy, thin, no baking.
- Cream colour — blush, contour, highlight — pressed in; powder colour only over a set area, if any.
- Setting: a whisper of fine powder only where the skin oils (often nowhere); a fine mist of setting spray to hold.
- Lips: exfoliated and balmed; a lined, filled satin or cream lipstick.

Hurt: matte long-wear foundations; powder foundations; mattifying primers; all-over powder; baking; grainy scrubs; alcohol-heavy toners; retinoids or acids introduced in the final weeks.
Under flash

Jaipur's dry heat from October to May, and its cold winter evenings, dehydrate skin fast. A humidifier in the bedroom the week before an event, a richer night moisturiser, hydration before the base, and a satin (not dewy) base with a warm cream highlight for a lawn reception that drops to single digits after sunset.
