How to Contour a Long Face: shortening the length and adding width — the horizontal rules

A long or oblong face is clearly longer than it is wide, with the forehead, cheekbones and jaw close in width, and contour does two things — shortens it with shadow at the hairline and under the chin, and widens it with everything else placed horizontally: blush across the apples, no vertical highlight down the centre, a flat brow, hair with width instead of height. How to read the shape is in Face Shapes Explained; the products and the general method in What is Contouring? and Cream vs Powder Contour; blush and highlight placement in Blush Placement by Face Shape and Highlighter Placement and Finishes.
Where the shadow goes
| Zone | Placement | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hairline | A soft shadow along the top of the forehead into the hairline, blended down | Shortens from the top |
| Under the chin | A soft shadow under the chin's tip, blended onto the neck | Shortens from the bottom |
| Cheekbone | A short, more horizontal shadow under the cheekbone — not a long diagonal | Adds width; a long diagonal adds length |
| Temples | None, or a whisper | Temple shadow narrows — the opposite of what is wanted |
| Nose | A shadow under the tip if the nose is long; the bridge highlight shortened | A long nose reads as more length |
Blush and highlight for a long face
- Blush: across the apples, swept horizontally toward the ears — the single most effective widening move.
- Highlight: the top of the cheekbone only, placed outward; no highlight down the centre of the forehead, bridge and chin — the vertical line lengthens.
- Brows: flat or straight with a low gentle arch and a little extra length at the tail — the horizontal line breaks up the length; a high arch lifts and lengthens.
What to avoid
- A long diagonal cheekbone contour.
- Vertical highlight down the centre.
- Temple contour.
- High-arched brows.
- Height in the hair; a tight centre parting.
- Blush high and angled toward the temple.
For brides
A matha patti or a broad tikka rather than a long pendant (which lengthens), a broad choker (the aad shortens the neck and the lower face — a friend to a long face), earrings with width, hair with side volume and no height, and the dupatta set back or open rather than tightly framing (a tight frame lengthens). The artist checks with the pieces on; the choker and the matha patti often do half the work.
The method, whichever shape
- Cream contour on the cream base, placed as above with a small angled brush or a sponge, then blended until no edge exists — blend the edge, not the placement.
- A light powder set; powder contour to reinforce for a long function.
- Bronzer over the perimeter if the face needs warmth (fair skin, red or white outfits).
- Blush placed for the shape; highlight on the points that suit it.
- Checked straight on in daylight and by phone flash; for a bride, checked again with the dupatta and tikka on, because the pieces change the apparent shape.
Shade: one to two steps deeper than the base, cool-neutral so it reads as shadow — a neutral brown on warm and olive skin, never orange or grey-taupe. See Bronzer vs Contour.
From Chhaya Yadav's experience
Observations from bridal and teaching work in Jaipur — professional observations, not statistics.
- The aad is a long face's best friend — it shortens the lower face, and I add less under the chin when it is on.
- A long tikka pendant on a long face is the piece I steer away from most often; a matha patti in its place changes the whole frame.
- Horizontal blush across the apples — students find it old-fashioned until they see the photograph.
- No highlight down the centre is the rule I repeat on every long-faced bride; the nose-to-chin line of light is what lengthens.
Frequently asked questions
Where does contour go on a long face? At the hairline (a soft shadow along the top of the forehead) and under the chin — the two placements that shorten — plus a short, more horizontal shadow under the cheekbone for width. Not at the temples, and not as a long diagonal, both of which add length.
Where does blush go on a long face? Across the apples, swept horizontally toward the ears. It is the most effective widening move on the face; blush high and angled toward the temple lengthens instead.
Why no highlight down the centre? A line of light from the forehead down the bridge to the chin draws the eye vertically and makes a long face longer. Highlight on a long face goes on the tops of the cheekbones, placed outward, and nowhere down the middle.
Which bridal pieces suit a long face? A matha patti or broad tikka rather than a long pendant, a broad choker (it shortens the neck and the lower face), earrings with width, hair with side volume and no height, and the dupatta set back or open. The choker and the matha patti often do half the shortening before any contour.
Key takeaways
- Shorten: hairline shadow, under-chin shadow; widen: horizontal blush, a short horizontal cheekbone shadow, side volume in the hair.
- No vertical centre highlight, no temple contour, no long diagonal, no high arch.
- A flat gentle brow with a longer tail.
- For brides, a matha patti and a broad choker do half the work; no long pendant.
