HD Makeup Myths: eight things said about HD makeup at counters and in bridal packages, and what is actually true
Most of what is said about HD makeup confuses a finish with a formula, a method, or a price. HD describes how a base reads under a camera — finely-milled pigment, light-diffusing particles, no visible edge — and nothing else. Eight claims, one by one. 1. "HD lasts longer"
Wear comes from prep, primer, thin layers, set and climate — the same for every base. The HD finish adds no wear. A long-wear HD product lasts because it is long-wear, not because it is HD. Full answer in How Long Does HD Makeup Last?.
2. "HD is heavier / gives more coverage"
Weight and coverage are set by the amount applied and the product's pigment load. HD formulas often read lighter because the diffusing particles blur edges. A thick coat of HD is a mask; a thin one is skin. Coverage is chosen separately — see Coverage vs Finish.
3. "HD is waterproof / sweat-proof"
Water resistance is a property of film-formers and a film-forming setting spray. Silica does not resist water. Waterproof exists across categories; "HD" says nothing about it.
4. "HD is only for cameras — it looks wrong in person"
In person a well-applied HD base reads as smooth skin; the diffusing particles soften pores and lines in daylight too. The "wrong in person" cases are flashback (white silica over-applied, seen only under a hard frontal flash) and a pale shade — both faults of application and matching, not of the finish.
5. "HD needs no powder"
The idea comes from HD powders flashing back when heavily applied. The fix is a light press of the right powder (tinted on medium and deep skin, banana on golden) by zone — not skipping the set. Unset HD on oily skin slides like any base.
6. "HD is airbrush" / "airbrush is HD"
HD is a finish; airbrush is an application method with a compressor and a gun. They overlap (airbrush formulas can be HD-finish) and differ (airbrush is chosen for smooth oily skin and long hot functions; HD for camera-readiness on any application). See HD Makeup vs Airbrush Makeup.
7. "HD suits every skin"
The finish suits most skin, but the products vary: silica-heavy formulas dry mature and dry skin and can accentuate flakes; the HD choice for dry skin is a hydrating HD base and no HD powder on the cheeks. The reading is by skin, as always.
8. "HD costs more because the products cost more"
The products are somewhat costlier, but a bridal "HD package" price reflects the artist's time, skill, trial and kit, not the difference between two foundation bottles. A price should be compared on what is included — trial, functions, assistant, travel — not on the word.
What HD actually promises
A base that reads as skin under a high-resolution camera when it is matched, applied thinly, set by zone and tested under flash at the trial. That is enough — it is what the album shows.
