Eye Makeup for Deep-Set and Downturned Eyes: bringing the eye forward and lifting the corner

Deep-set eyes and downturned eyes are corrected in opposite directions from the usual eyeshadow rules: a deep-set eye is brought forward with light on the lid and crease colour placed above the socket, while a downturned eye is lifted with every element at the outer corner angled upward. Both are common and both are easy to make worse with a standard smoky placement. Deep-set eyes

What the shape does

The eye sits back under a strong brow bone; the socket is already in shadow; the lid is recessed and can look small. Dark colour anywhere low in the socket pushes the eye further back and reads as tired.

Placement

1. Prime; a skin-tone set.
2. Lid: a light, satin or soft-shimmer shade over the whole mobile lid — the lid comes forward.
3. Crease: a mid-tone matte placed above the natural crease, on the brow bone's lower edge, checked with the eye open so it shows; blended upward. Not in the socket.
4. Outer corner: a deeper shade in a small, soft V lifted toward the brow tail, kept off the lid's centre.
5. Inner corner and brow bone: a matte or satin light shade.
6. Liner: thin, tight to the lashes, thickening only at the outer third; tightline. See Tightlining Explained.
7. Lower lash line: a soft mid-tone on the outer third; the waterline nude or a soft brown; never black all round.
8. Lashes: curled, mascara, a few clusters on the outer half.

Variants

• Smoky: deepest shade at the lashes and outer corner only, the lid centre kept lighter, the crease colour above the socket.
• Bridal: champagne or gold lid, bronze above the crease, brown wing at the outer third, brown kajal, individual lashes.
• Cut crease: the cut placed higher than the natural crease so it shows; a pale lid.

Downturned eyes

What the shape does

The outer corner sits lower than the inner, the lower lash line curves down, and the eye can read sad or tired. Anything that follows or extends the downward line worsens it.

Placement

1. Prime; set.
2. Lid: a light-to-mid shade.
3. Outer V: a deeper shade placed at the outer corner and blended up and out toward the tail of the brow — the visual pull upward; nothing below the corner.
4. Crease: mid-tone, blended up and out at the same angle.
5. Liner: thin along the inner two-thirds, thicker at the outer third, ending before the outer corner and lifting in a short flick angled to the brow tail — the wing does not follow the lash line down. See Winged Eyeliner Step by Step.
6. Lower lash line: light — a soft shade on the outer third only, or nothing; never lined to the corner, never dark.
7. Inner corner: a light shade to balance the lift.
8. Lashes: clusters on the outer third angled up; a strip only if it is lighter at the outer end, never heavy.
9. Brows: the tail kept level or slightly lifted; a downward tail drags the eye.

Variants

• Smoky: the gradient lifted into the V, lower line clean.
• Bridal: bronze gradient with the V lifted, a lifted wing, kajal in the upper waterline only, outer-third lashes.

The two shapes together

Many eyes are both deep-set and slightly downturned: light lid, crease colour above the socket, and the outer V lifted. The rules combine without conflict — light and forward, up and out.
